This week, one of our projects was to build a gingerbread village. The students constructed houses out of graham crackers and glue, which was made of icing sugar and water to create the perfect consistency to build with! They experimented with ways to keep their walls up, becoming little architects! It was challenging and fun! It wasn't long before they had the process down! First, glue two crackers together creating a corner so they could support each other while working on the next part. The roof tops were especially challenging as the students realized they had to hold it in place for a moment as the 'glue' dried! Here are some pictures of the students hard at work! The most exciting part was decorating the village with candies and chocolate! Some candies were placed with intent (such as lifesavers for bike and car wheels and yellow jelly beans as ducks in the pond) and other candies were added for mere pleasure! The picture to the right...well that student decided to take a break and lick some 'glue' off his plate! It's tough work being an architect! Below is the lone car of the village. It's a environmentally friendly village were bikes are the common mode of transportation! A very successful activity, next step...eat our village! We had to enjoy it for a little bit before we ate it and ofcourse had to make sure all the students were present before we dug in :) Apologizes in advance to my students parents for any hyper activity resulting from eating the village ;)
