The best thing to do with so many paper scraps is to make new paper! That is exactly what we did with all the scraps from another a previous activity. We soaked the paper in water overnight and the following day, we blended the paper, added sparkles and used the screens and felt pads pictured below to make new sheets of paper. A few days to fully dry and our beautifully pressed new paper will be ready for whatever our hearts desire! Now this had nothing to do with our current unit of inquiry but is a great learning opportunity to demonstrate how we can reuse what is essentially garbage to make something new.

Our paper has dried out and we are ready to use it! I asked the students what they wanted to use to draw on our new and beautiful paper and the majority chose paint so that is exactly what we did...democracy at it's finest ;)
We used water paints so that we kept the effect of homemade paper and painted away. After we finished, we watched the video below to better understand the paper making process. Take a look with your child at home, they were very interested and it's a great little video.
Today, we had so much fun making paper with the scraps from our recycling center! After a short chat about what we were going to do and all the steps required, we got to work. We started by tearing the scrap paper into small pieces, an exercise that is great for our little fingers. Then we took turns to fill the blender with paper and water. Once we finished blending the paper and water...into something that was described in some very funny ways...we were ready to use the mesh and felt to make our sheets. In teams, we took turns inserting the mesh frames into our mix and then flattening them down and squeezing excess water with the felt sheets. Everyone worked so great together and we are really excited to see how our paper will turn out!
What can we make with all the items from our recycling center? This is what I asked the students yesterday morning. We dumped all the bins out and everyone took a few minutes to think of what they could build or how they could reuse some of the items we had collected. There were no limitations and no instructions other than make whatever you want! Some extras like tissue paper, paint and glue were added to the mix. Some of the creations were very practical, for example, a straw holder and some were more artsy. There was also a submarine, a pirate ship and a boat...very creative!
Continuing to reinforce where different things get thrown out and practicing our cutting and writing skills as well as our unit vocabulary!
