Everyone did a great job cleaning up Morrison Park last week! Motivated students worked in teams to pick up any trash they found around the park. Once we finished, the park looked much nicer! We picked up about 6 bags of garbage! Great work everyone!

Our adventure to the bookmobile today was fantastic! Everyone was so excited, and not just about the bookmobile, but about the fact that some of us use the same road to get to school, that we had a map to follow in order to arrive to our destination, that the park we spend lots of time at for recess was around the corner, that there were little treasures found along the way and most of all, the friendly mail lady we met on the way back that showed us what the grey Canada Post box was for and let us lift her heavy mail bag...it was heavy, she's very strong! Inside the Bookmobile, we met the librarian of Grant Alternative School, she introduced us to the librarians on the bus and they helped us look for the books we wanted to borrow. Next week, more books and another adventure!
The kids have been working very hard on their cities. Plasticine buildings, parks, signs, lakes and more, all made of plasticine and finally, the transportation systems that connect them all. After some discussion, checking out different books and exploring a variety of maps, it was time to develop our own little cities. The first task was to plan out where the homes, parks, etc would go and then to connect it all. We worked in two groups, each group chose a group leader and named their city. They drew using chalk on the table and once the plan was complete, the building began! All of their construction was inspired by their knowledge and creativity! Some more work has yet to be done but the cities are looking fantastic. Charlottetown and The City of Bamalikiko are the city names!
Yesterday, the students participated in an activity organized by two grade 6 students for their PYP Exposition. They were all placed in groups by class and prepared that day's lunch, meat excluded. The idea behind it being meatless came from the grade 6 student's research on the types of foods that have a big water footprint. After a litte presentation put on by the two students, everyone got to work. Great work everyone!
This week, we worked on breaking up transportation related vocabulary into different sound combonations. The students cut out little squares of paper and used those to write the sounds. Once they finished, they glued the words in their French journal. An activity thoughrouly enjoyed!
I don't know about you, but getting a hand written letter in the mail leaves me with a feeling of nostalgia! In elementary, my friends and I used to send each other letters by mail (yes, within Ottawa) and it was always very exciting to receive a letter written just for you...by good old fashioned mail! Since our unit is about transportation, it was a great time to use the letter and envelope cut-outs from our French workbook, Mélissa et ses amis. We talked about the mail delivery system, our need for it and how it is directly related to transportation and transportation systems.
The kids wrote their name on a piece of paper and picked names out of a hat (well it was a box). It was top secret information. We decided on what we wanted to write, drew a little picture and folded up our letters. All of this was very exciting, especially the part of keeping who we picked a secret. This was taken very seriously by some friends! In the envelopes our letters went, along with a stamp and the address of our friend. In art class, Mme France had the kids colour a post card to send as well. We went for a walk down Morrison Dr. and mailed our letters. They should be arriving soon! |
