Patterns are a beautiful thing, they are all around us and are part of our schooling across many disciplines. Not only do we explore patterns during math class but in language classes, science, music and visual arts. Patterns are explored a great deal in elementary and up and this is exactly what we did yesterday. With clipboards in hand, we went outside on the search for patterns. Our task was to find a pattern and then either draw or write what we saw. Before we went out, we came up with a few examples of patterns we would find outside. A bee's stripes, the bricks on the building and the bark on a tree were among some of the examples. During our hunt the students discovered many more patterns, from the fence around the playground, to the petals of a dandelion to the tread on wheels. Two of today's discoveries were particularly exciting. First, a student was fascinated by the fact that living things had patterns, their sincere excitement is why I love this age! Second, once we lined up to go inside a student made a fantastic observation, our line up was a pattern! And I quote "Our line is a pattern!!!! Person, gap, person, gap, person, gap!!!!" Those extra exclamation marks are a true representation of the tone in which that quote was said! Ok, now that I wrote PATTERN in every sentence of my paragraph time to watch the video! Ask your kids about patterns in your home and see what they can come up with!

Well what do you know, came across this song in YouTube while searching for French children's music. I must say that I do love this song and if your child was in PreK/JK/SK at Acadecap last year then they love it too! Have them listen and sing along, great for reinforcing French vocabulary. The lyrics are also there which is great ;) Our défi mathématiques workbook begins with these cards games that are similar to the popular logic game Sudoku. Now that the game has been introduced, students can work independently or with a partner and complete the puzzles in their workbooks. Doing it as a class on the white board is also very exciting! Building confidence and working as a team one card at a time ;)
After reviewing the stories of é, è and ch in Raconte-moi les sons, we began a search for words containing those sounds. Before we started our search, we tried to think of as many words with the sound ch as we could...we did pretty good actually! But we found many many more in our pile of word cards! With every word found, an excited face would look up and announce it to the class! Our little word learners couldn't have been more enthusiastic! We concluded the lesson with a cut and paste of words with the sound ch. With letter sounds on our minds, we began to notice different words around our class with the sounds we had previously been learning about. Our word wall had the word école and our schedule had the words chanson and recherche, those were exciting finds let me tell you! A few pictures from last weeks reading buddies with Mme Lola's grade 4 class. I decided to have our reading buddy time in the library from now on because I noticed that all the students were really enjoying the freedom of reading whatever they wanted verses the smaller selection in my classroom library. They not only were really engaged, on both sides, but they are also learning how to use our library. Taking one book at a time and placing a marker to ensure it is returned to the appropriate place. The noise level is also very low as the big kids happily read to the younger ones, it sounds something like literacy love and I love it!
