What's more fun than using marshmallows as a tool to build with...nothing by the sound of the excitement in the kids voices when I introduced the activity! Tooth picks, marshmallows and instructions to be creative led to all the fabulous structures pictured below. This activity fosters the student's creativity while developing skills in math and science. That classifies as a STEM activity ;)

A conversation I heard while the kids were getting dressed for outdoor recess (although I heard the tail end, it was still very funny!)
With sincere curiosity E.M. asked, "What's Lego land?" With absolute certainty C.H. answered, "It's a country!" With a matter-of-fact tone C.D. said, "I live not in Lego land, I live in Canada." While I was preparing an activity, a student decided to inform me that she had once eaten paper...this is how it went... M.E., "One time I ate paper, for real!" Mme Nora, "Why would you eat paper?" M.E., "My mom wasn't looking, that's why!" As if I should have known! I guess we all need to try it once in our lives ;p Now, my goal is to make an effort to always write down these hilarious interactions! Symmetry is an important mathematical concept that students begin to develop in kindergarten. It serves as the basis for many other mathematical concepts, and builds on a child's instincts to look for balance and order. In fact, when we began this activity, some students related their understanding of symmetry to a balance and the weight of objects. Since students can best learn when they can relate to the content, it is important to use real-life examples. We've looked at where we see patterns in our environment, outside and all around us, next we will do the same with symmetry. Can we spot it in the park, in our homes? We'll see!
Our nature walk and scavenger hunt at Stony Swamp couldn't have been more refreshing! Out on a beautiful day, nothing but the sounds of nature...and happy kids! We may just make this a tradition :) Acadecap @ Stony Swamp by Slidely Slideshow Since we are talking about our efforts in caring for our environment, it would be good for us to really know where the things we use on a daily basis end up. So, we will start with our snacks. We grabbed all of our snack bags and brought them up to class for a classifying and graphing activity. We classified things in three categories; garbage, recycling and compost. Towards the end, the kids started cheering when compost or recycling was 'beating' the garbage! That told me that they realized which one should have the highest bar! In the end, we had lots of garbage but an equal amount of things that could go in the compost...they decided that that was good ;) Yesterday afternoon, the students worked on measuring items from their recycling center using non standard measuring tools. They estimated, counted and compared the items they chose. We talked about the standard tools we use to measure and reinforced the vocabulary in French! Below is a list of some of the French vocabulary we used :)
