We are just about to wrap up our unit about living things and at the end of each unit (as well as throughout), we reflect on our learning. Today, we used our journals to document our reflections. The students were asked to take a few moments to think about what we did throughout the unit and what they learned. Then they drew a picture about what they learned and I wrote down their reflection.

Today, we had another discussion about what makes a living thing, living. Without any prompting, I asked the students questions to see what they knew. After our discussion, they drew in their journals, the instructions for their journal was to draw any living thing they wanted and to tell me how they know it is living. Great work! Understanding this concept is pretty solid now!
After a busy day, we took some time to reflect, draw and write in our journals. The students were asked to draw anything they thought to be significant about their week so far. Everyone had something unique to draw but most importantly, it was something that was important to them. Some friends also practiced their writing by copying the date as well as the sentence that described their illustration.
All the kids are very much enjoying all the music that is part of their daily lives at school, including the classical music they listen to in Mme Marta's violin class. We decided to work while listening to, what the students call, the lion song. Find it under the music tab along with some other class favourites :) Last week, we did our first entry in our journals. Our journals will be used as a free-expression and free-writing tool where students will have the opportunity to reflect and illustrate their thoughts and ideas. As we begin, I will act as a scribe but with time, students will develop the skills to write letters, words, sentences to describe their illustration. The 'free' part of our journal writing is to encourage students to write about what is important to them, the writing process is much more likely to be meaningful and thus the learning becomes more productive in terms of language development.
Every week, we will spend some time writing in our reflection journals. Yesterday, on the first day of school, we reflected on how the first day of school was special to us. We wrote 1er jour d'école and drew a picture that represented a special part of our day. Some students felt that putting on their uniform was special, some thought that seeing their friends after a long summer holiday was special, there were many special parts! During the first part of the year, the teacher will act as a scribe and/or the students will copy sentences of the board. Towards the end of the school year, students will begin to write their reflections on their own! A great year of learning ahead! |
