This week, we did some measuring of various body parts using unifix cubes. Students measured or had a friend measure and then they recorded the answers on their data sheet. We'll be measuring ourselves with other non-standard units of measurement in the following weeks. Later, we will try and apply some of our measurement skills in activities that will involve predicting the length of various items. In the past, I've had some pretty creative guesses such as the block tower being 100 markers long, lets see how we do!

A short, impromptu activity about measurement. Each student had a partner and had to measure their partners feet using foam cubes from our math center. We recorded our results on the chalk board and looked at who had the biggest and smallest feet and whose feet measured the same. Mine were the biggest, we found out ;)
It is not often that I use worksheets in the class unless it is accompanied by something else or to reinforce a hands on activity but since this one included some fine motor work and some writing practice I thought it would be a fun exercise. And, of course, they also practice the correct use of a ruler...can't start measuring from the middle ;)
Students cut out a ruler on the side of the page and measured the insects pictured on the sheet. Then they proudly wrote the correct measurement underneath each insect. Some made some pretty accurate guess on how long they thought the insects would be! Yesterday afternoon, the students worked on measuring items from their recycling center using non standard measuring tools. They estimated, counted and compared the items they chose. We talked about the standard tools we use to measure and reinforced the vocabulary in French! Below is a list of some of the French vocabulary we used :)
A few of the math activities that students were freely exploring during our afternoon math period! Enjoy ;)
Math Madness by Slidely Slideshow The unit 'Community Living' lends itself well to talking about different types of homes and construction. After our discussion about the different types of homes we see in our community, we designed our very own home that we would later measure. Students became little designers and architects, adding landscapes, people and most of all, using their imagination to create different types of windows, doors, chimneys and walkways. Once they finished their design, they used rulers to measure parts of the home and recorded the measurements. We also learned some new (or not so new) French vocabulary during this activity. You could review some of the words at home! Règle, fenêtre, porte, maison, fleur. Some students were really excited to realize that some of the sides of their house were the same length! We measured in centimeters; for some students, it was their first time using a ruler accurately. Once they became comfortable, they were eager to measure everything!!
