The kids have been working very hard on their cities. Plasticine buildings, parks, signs, lakes and more, all made of plasticine and finally, the transportation systems that connect them all. After some discussion, checking out different books and exploring a variety of maps, it was time to develop our own little cities. The first task was to plan out where the homes, parks, etc would go and then to connect it all. We worked in two groups, each group chose a group leader and named their city. They drew using chalk on the table and once the plan was complete, the building began! All of their construction was inspired by their knowledge and creativity! Some more work has yet to be done but the cities are looking fantastic. Charlottetown and The City of Bamalikiko are the city names!

If you are a parent of one of the students in our class, you already know that the butterflies came out of their cocoon and that today we released them outside! During their one week stay in our classroom, we did lots of observing and learning. One pretty neat thing that we got to see was how butterflies eat! We learned that instead of the usual insect mouth, butterflies have a long, thin tube which they use to suck up nectar and other liquids. We put orange slices in their aquarium and watched as they sucked up the sweet juices. Some students pointed out that our butterflies looked very similar to monarch butterflies...this is very true, same colours on the upper part of their wings and neutral colours on the other side. Could be used as camouflage against predators...better look that up!
The butterfly release was really fun, at first it was a challenge to get the butterflies to come up onto our fingers but we got the hang of it! Mme Stephanie's toddlers happened to be in the playground at the same time so they joined in! Some butterflies really didn't want to leave! I think they sensed our love for them ;) Enjoy the video!
Below is our time lapse video for the chick project! We are very fortunate to have been able to capture the process with the iPads! Special thanks to Mme Carter for her tech expertise and for creating the video!
_This week, one of our projects was to build a gingerbread village. The students constructed houses out of graham crackers and glue, which was made of icing sugar and water to create the perfect consistency to build with! They experimented with ways to keep their walls up, becoming little architects! It was challenging and fun! It wasn't long before they had the process down! First, glue two crackers together creating a corner so they could support each other while working on the next part. The roof tops were especially challenging as the students realized they had to hold it in place for a moment as the 'glue' dried! Here are some pictures of the students hard at work! _The most exciting part was decorating the village with candies and chocolate! Some candies were placed with intent (such as lifesavers for bike and car wheels and yellow jelly beans as ducks in the pond) and other candies were added for mere pleasure! The picture to the right...well that student decided to take a break and lick some 'glue' off his plate! It's tough work being an architect! Below is the lone car of the village. It's a environmentally friendly village were bikes are the common mode of transportation! A very successful activity, next step...eat our village! We had to enjoy it for a little bit before we ate it and ofcourse had to make sure all the students were present before we dug in :) Apologizes in advance to my students parents for any hyper activity resulting from eating the village ;) Step 2 of our art projects:
Construction Now we build, turning our ideas into reality. The excitement and enthusiasm is priceless. As the students saw their projects developing, their pride and confidence grew bigger and bigger! Kindergarten imagination at work :) Students used boxes and toilet paper rolls, cd's and straws...all types of materials to create the body of their creations. Next, they will add details and decorations! Step 1 of our art projects: Planning Brainstorming and sketching our ideas was the first step towards creating our art projects. Planning is an important aspect of any successful endeavor and a great habit to develop. As they say, for young children, it is important to focus on the process and not the product. With the freedom to create whatever they imagined, the students were inspired and excited to begin! Hmmm, creative juices are flowing! Putting ideas on paper! Finding inspiration from peers :) Hard at work! "What ya workin' on?!"
