As part of our summative assessment, I had students fill in a mind map of the members that make up their community.

Our unit on communities is wrapping up and we've started talking about our next unit, which is about life cycles. But before we finished up, we needed to have a few more activities and discussions about how the people in a community are connected, and to help visualize this concept, we drew lines to connect the members based on how they needed each other or how they may come across one another. The kids each took a turn at the board, they made up a story as to why one member could possibly connect with another and then drew the connection. For example, the dentist's house had a fire and he had to call the fire department. Firefighters came to his home and a connection was made! Another example was the vet and the teacher. The teacher's cat was sick and she needed to go see the vet, another connection made! The kids really loved coming up with connections and therefore really reinforcing the concept, we are all connected in some way and we all work together to make our community a great place to be!
The JK students came up with a list of possible jobs of people in a community and using what they came up with, I created a form that they would use to get information from their school mates as to what they wanted to be when they grew up. If what they wanted to be was not on the list, the JK kids made an X on the bottom of the page to represent 'other'. So we went around the school and gathered all the information we could before going back to class and making one main graph to represent all the info we got. We found that there were many community jobs that we had not come up with! Later, we practiced making bar graphs and collecting info on our little chalk boards.
The JK kids along with their SK, Grade 1 and 2 friends had a fantastic visit at fire station 21 this past Monday!
This morning, we looked at and talked about the pictures of kids going to school in different places around the globe. Before we started, we put on our observation glasses so we didn't miss anything! Our main focus was to look for things that were the same or different form our school community. After looking through many of the pictures in the book, we wrote down a couple of our observations. We noticed that in many parts of the world, children's school life and school community looks much like ours, but there were lots of different things as well. Over the next week, we'll continue looking at the rest of the pictures and we'll write down more observations so we can come to a conclusion as to whether school communities around the world differ from our own or not.
Last Friday, we visited the seniors at the Redwoods Retirement Residence. The students sang songs, shared their interests and talked about their school. They asked the senior questions about the communities they grew up in and the toys they played with when they were little. It was a great visit and a cold walk back to school!
