This morning, our new unit of inquiry was introduced to the students. All about family but more specifically (which we will soon get into) is family history, how we can document it and how it helps us learn about ourselves. To start, I asked the students to 'write' on their sticky notes anything that came to mind when they thought about the word family. They then added their sticky note to our brainstorm. This exact activity will be done at the end of the unit and we will compare what we thought before and after. Later in the morning, we went to the library to search for any books that were, in one way or another, about family.

After we develop unit-related questions, we brainstorm ideas for ways in which we can find answers and ways we can learn about the topic. We also further discuss the questions throughout the unit in case we have more that come up! Our brainstorms and discussions encourage sharing our ideas and curiosities, building on each other's ideas and eventually deciding as a group on various activities we can do to find answers and learn about the topic at hand!
Some of the questions students had at the beginning of the unit were about our physical selves, especially the brain. This was great as it can be linked to the 5 senses. Other questions were 'how are we different from others' and 'what is a characteristic'. As the facilitator of discussions, I help build on each student's ideas, make suggestions and pose questions of my own. Today, we came up with a few ideas to help us find the answers to our questions and further explore the unit topic. The students decided that we should:
Stay tuned for updates! What is a central idea? This morning in English class, students looked at what a central idea is and talked about our current unit's central idea which is The experience of childhood has changed over time, but some things have remained the same. The focus being childhood, the students began brainstorming words that they related to childhood and what they thought childhood represented. We will do a similar activity in French and we will look the students will have a better based to begin investigating the similarities and differences between childhood over time.
Yesterday, we started our new unit titled 'Let's Be Friends'. We had a little discussion, came up with questions that will drive our inquiry and decided on some activities that will get us started and help us learn! Afterwards, we decided to make friendship bracelets that we would later share with our friends! This morning, we did a little brainstorming session before we shared our bracelets. We made a mind map about friendship. The kids had lots to share, which demonstrated their understanding and knowledge about friendship. Once we finished, we put it up on the cork board for reference...and reminders ;) Finally, it was time to share our friendship bracelets!!! One by one, we took turns closing our eyes and reaching in the brown paper bag to get our special friendship bracelet. Apart from being beautiful bracelets, these bracelets will act as a reminder of the friendships we have in our class :) |
