Now that the marker paint is ready we are ready to PAINT! The colours come out quite beautifully and equally beautiful are the paintings the kids made :)

A little glue, salt, paintbrushes and paper is all it took for these little artists to make endless pictures of cars and dinosaurs, rocket ships and portraits of friends. I must be honest, my intention when starting this activity was to have the preschoolers make a textured alphabet but since it didn't really work as I thought it would, we made pictures instead! Gotta be flexible ;) Calm music, engaged students, fun and challenging math activities! Math Centers by Slidely Slideshow
So since my little kiddos have decided on a tradition of not putting the caps back on markers, I will have a tradition of making marker paint! What is marker paint you say?! Only the coolest paint you could make in a preschool & kinder class! Marker paint is made with old, dried up markers that would otherwise be thrown into the garbage. We put them tip down into a little bit of water and wait for the ink to saturate the water, leaving behind what is essentially a water colour paint. So, not only is it cool but it is also a great activity to demonstrate how we can be creative and reuse things rather than adding them to our overflowing landfills. I'm sure there is some science involved ;) There always is! We did this activity last year after a major clean up of the after school play area. We found many dried out markers and not wanting to throw them away, we brainstormed some ideas of what to do with them. We came up with marker paint! It worked out really well. It took about a week for the ink to run down into the water and we were left with some pretty great marker paint! So now this shall become my class tradition!
Marker Paint! by Slidely Slideshow Inside outside is a super fun game I found on none other than the fabulous Pinterest...love that site! An activity sheet with a circle in the center, a bunch of unifix cubes, paper and pencils is all we need to play the game. Students throw a handful of cubes onto the activity sheet then record the number of cubes on the outside and the number of cubes on the inside. The aim is to add both numbers together. Students use a variety of methods to complete the equation. Some put all the cubes together and then count them, some start from one number and count up and some just use their fingers! |
