The butterfly release was really fun, at first it was a challenge to get the butterflies to come up onto our fingers but we got the hang of it! Mme Stephanie's toddlers happened to be in the playground at the same time so they joined in! Some butterflies really didn't want to leave! I think they sensed our love for them ;) Enjoy the video!
If you are a parent of one of the students in our class, you already know that the butterflies came out of their cocoon and that today we released them outside! During their one week stay in our classroom, we did lots of observing and learning. One pretty neat thing that we got to see was how butterflies eat! We learned that instead of the usual insect mouth, butterflies have a long, thin tube which they use to suck up nectar and other liquids. We put orange slices in their aquarium and watched as they sucked up the sweet juices. Some students pointed out that our butterflies looked very similar to monarch butterflies...this is very true, same colours on the upper part of their wings and neutral colours on the other side. Could be used as camouflage against predators...better look that up!

A great video of the PreK/JK/SK students in Mme Carter's ICT class!
Now that we have become very familiar with the development of a chicken embryo, we did a little cut, paste and sequence activity. We had 21 images of each stage of growth to cut out and place in the right order. Once they were pasted, the kids were tasked with numbering the eggs from 1-21. Good math practice too ;)
This activity concludes our Life Cycles unit, on to the last one!
Below is our time lapse video for the chick project! We are very fortunate to have been able to capture the process with the iPads! Special thanks to Mme Carter for her tech expertise and for creating the video!
Today is a very special day as some of our chicks have finally hatched! Four hatched so far, two of which hatched over night. We are incredibly fortunate to have watched the other two hatch before our eyes! The kids were amazed, excited and incredibly happy to get to watch the hatching process! It is rather slow but worth the wait! We used a time lapse app on one of our iPads to capture the process, you will get to see the video soon! Special thanks to Mme Carter for her help with that! Our curious kids asked some great questions that we will have to find the answers to! A little observing and searching and we will know how long they take to dry, why one of the chicks is black and how long they take to grow! I'm sure there will be more questions to come! We have yet to name them, but we surely will! We have had many visitors in our class, everyone is invited to come and see! Stay tuned for the video!! Storytelling is a great way to further understanding of knowledge learned and to develop communication and listening skills. Last week, students participated in some creative storytelling of their own using silhouettes of the stages of various life cycles. We used the projector rather than a white sheet so I guess it was a combination of shadow puppets and silhouettes! The kids enjoyed telling the story of their chosen life cycle in their very unique way ;)
