Today the kindergarten class took a trip to the Fire Station! It was so exciting! We got to sit in the driver seat of a fire truck, heard a test call from dispatch and had an awesome tour of the station. We learned all about the fire truck. It has many compartments for all the types of emergencies fire fighters have to attend to. We got some great safety tips and information...don't forget to have a fire plan for home! Thank you Ladder 21 'B' Platoon, you guys are amazing and we appreciate you!

How do plants 'drink' water? This was the question that led us to carry out this science experiment. We have already determined that plants need water, among a few other things, to grow and be healthy. So how exactly does this happen? During our initial discussion, some students shared that plants get water from their roots. Precisely!! Further investigation using celery, water, food colouring and vases showed us how the water travels up the plant to the leaves allowing it to grow. We filled the vases with water, added food colouring and then added the celery stalks. We left it for one day. The next day, we took the celery out of the coloured water and cut the celery two different ways, lengthwise and across. We observed the celery and found that in the pieces cut across the stalk, there were dots the same colour as the water. These were the 'tubes' in which water was transported to the leaves. The lengthwise cut showed us how the tubes traveled and transported the water up towards the leaves. Once we looked at all this as a group, the students explored the celery!
It is so exciting to be able to connect with children a world away! We shared our art and pictures, our likes and information about our country and city! We learn that these students, the same age as us, have many things in common. Their class looks like ours, with books and games and art on the walls! It is very special and we are very excited for them to receive our mail and to receive mail in return! Here is a picture of what we sent Mme Catherine and her kindergarten class in France!
The early stages of our plants growth. Students are checking out the plants with magnifying glasses to see if anything had sprouted. Some had sprouted and some...not yet. We talked about why and some of the reasons we came up with were:
- the seed didn't get enough water to grow - we may have planted the seed quite deep and it's taking a little longer to sprout - it's just doesn't want to grow ;-) Also taking a closer look at the other plants at our plant table! Excited students were busy personalizing their clay pots that will later house their pretty little flower. After the pots dried, the students planted their seeds and made sure the soil was not dry. Now it is up to them to nurture their plants and watch them grow. We took pictures of day one and will take a picture every few days to document their plants growth! Check out the unit of inquiry newsletter to find out what we will be talking about during our next unit 'Caring for Living Things'
