You've probably heard of Mr 5, or Mr 4 or even Mr 3. These are picky eaters that will only eat if their plate of food has a specific number of pieces on it. We've made special plates of food for these picky eaters before, but this time, we made our very own book of possible options. Each student chose a number and made a book according to the number they chose. Once they were satisfied with the amount of plates they created, I stapled it all up for them and we went through the book to write the addition equations on each page to make sure they were correct!

If you're hearing your child sing something quite silly sounding about potatoes and body parts, in French, this is probably it!
Over the past week, we have been working on this little book about what it means to be a friend. Each student completed multiple pages and we stapled it up and here we go! Our very first book we created together! All the little statements written around each student are some of the reasons their friends said they love them. We'll do this once again, at the end of our unit, to see if we could add more. I am certain there are more reasons, and during the unit, we will have the opportunity to develop our vocabulary, within this context, which will help us be better able to express our feelings and thoughts thus being able to add to this with more detail!
This is part two of our house building activity. We started by reading 'If I Built a House' by Chris Van Dusen. After that, we discussed who exactly builds houses and discussed what we would want in a house if we were to build a house. After some discussion and learning about the steps we would take to build our own house (sort of simplified), we designed the front of our house using paint and blocks. Below is step two, where students designed the inside of their house, making a floor plan using rulers, stencils and a pencil. A simple yet descriptive birds eye view of the inside of their house. The next step will be building a small model of the house! That may take a few periods, we shall see!
Every Tuesday, we go to the library to choose a book to borrow for the week. The excitement over books is something I hope never fades as these guys get older! Looking at books with no purpose but pleasure develops early literacy skills such as left to right reading, recognizing that print carries a purpose, letter recognition and so much more!
