The Rube Goldberg fair is coming up and while we are not participating in the contest we will still be making a very simple machine. Our machine will not exceed 5 steps and I am confident we will be able to accomplish this! This morning, I showed the kids the videos below and once they watched them, they had some pretty fantastic comments that demonstrated a beginning understanding of what a Rube Goldberg machine is. We came up with some ideas of materials we could use and we will start experimenting with some ideas shortly!

After a review of the sounds we have already worked on and reading the story of 'le petit garcon sans mémoire' that teaches us about the letter E, we went on a word hunt. Our mission was to find words that had the letters we have worked on thus far. Although some review and repetition will still be required, some of us were beginning to sound out words we found on the hunt! It was very exciting!
Number of the week is an activity helps us learn that there are many ways to represent numbers. We use tally marks, a number line, a 10 frame and then we draw an image that we feel represents the number we are working on. The image section is much like the super fun défi math game, Mystero, which the kids love!
Today, we explored the world of shapes using our geoboards. We discussed the characteristics of different 2D shapes and practiced all the vocabulary in French. When our shape making came to an end, we got a little creative with the elastics and made all sorts of silly forms. Our little muscles were working hard to stretch those elastics in every possible way!
Here are a few images from our book Raconte-moi l'alphabet. Ask your child about the story behind the pictures and the sound those letters make in French. After reading the stories in the book, we do a variety of different activities to apply and reinforce the learning that happened. We look for the letters around the class, practice writing the letters, find words with those letters in books, write the letter in the sky and more fun and related activities.
Why did we decide to bake apples you ask? Well, apart from the fact that it's great fun, full of learning and skill building and most of all yummy, one of our morning circle rhymes is all about a mouse that does exactly what we did this morning. It is the day of her party so she cleans the carpet, finds apples, cuts and bakes them and then finally shares them with her little friends. Below are the words to the rhyme, read it at home and you'll find out that your child knows the words and knows what they mean too! The kids were involved in each and every part, minus taking the burning hot tray out of the toaster oven! They even cleaned the dishes we used! We shared with the toddlers and then had some baked apples at lunch. From what I observed, the process was more enjoyable than the finished product ;) We tied this activity to our unit by talking about one of the most important parts of friendship, sharing. We shared the responsibilities of the task (and cooperated in doing so) and we shared the apples with our younger friends! La comptine de la souris Aujourd'hui c'est ...(insert day of the week) C'est la fête à la souris Elle balaie son tapis Elle trouve une pomme d'api La coupe et la cuit Et la donne à ses petits |
