Check out the curriculum night documents if you did not have a chance to attend on Tuesday night :)
Even though we have Geoboards at school, once I saw this activity online, I started to think of Geoboards as limiting. Using a cork board and push pins and our creativity to make all sorts of shapes sounded much more appealing! Geoboards are used for a variety of reasons, as well as across the ages, but today our purpose was to make shapes. So, with the freedom to have 'pegs' placed wherever we want, we came up with some pretty funky shapes! We discussed how many sides and how many corners they had, if the sides were equal or if they were not. We even made up some names for our odd looking shapes! Our morning was full of pumpkin carving fun, ooey gooey pumpkin pulp and digging for yummy pumpkin seeds! While waiting for our turn to help, we talked about pumpkin adjectives...in French and English! Thanks Mme Alex for carving our pumpkin! During our last two math classes, I decided to have the kids tell me what math meant to them. I wanted to know what words they thought represented math. To start, we had a brainstorming session. We all closed our eyes and had a moment of reflection. What words came to mind when we thought of math? I wondered what links the kids would come up with?! While we do have a designated math time, kids engage in activities that develop math skills all the time. Almost anything can link to math! So, our reflection time was done (pictured below is the words they came up with). I was surprised that words like patterns and shapes did not come up but that does not mean that the kids don't know about them. Their knowledge of patterns, for example, is there but the link of patterns to mathematics may not yet be. Once they had finished coming up with words, they used the iPads to make word clouds! In small groups, they took turns typing...that was cute to watch, as they went up to the board yelling out letters to their team mates and getting excited once they finished typing a word! This took longer than I thought...but they did their task with enthusiasm and definitely with lots of pride! Une chanson très drôle qui a été partagé par Mme Katie! Merci! |
