Last week, we celebrated v-day by baking cupcakes and having an afternoon tea party. The long anticipated activity was loads of fun and a moderate amount of sugar...sorry! Thanks to Erick for providing tea sandwiches! I think we will have to make the afternoon tea party a yearly tradition!

This morning, our new unit of inquiry was introduced to the students. All about family but more specifically (which we will soon get into) is family history, how we can document it and how it helps us learn about ourselves. To start, I asked the students to 'write' on their sticky notes anything that came to mind when they thought about the word family. They then added their sticky note to our brainstorm. This exact activity will be done at the end of the unit and we will compare what we thought before and after. Later in the morning, we went to the library to search for any books that were, in one way or another, about family.
A little bit of math and a little bit of fun on the 100th day of school! Students made necklaces with 100 cheerios. To make sure the necklace had 100 (because it is very easy to loose count!) after each group of 10, they added a marker. Then we counted by tens all the way to 100 to double check! Some necklaces didn't make it home and some made it home with just the red markers, it was quite the tempting necklace to take bites of!
Yesterday's English class was full of a phenomenal amount of learning, questioning, observations and connections. Now all this seems like a lot, especially when I tell you that most of our English class was reading the book pictured below. The evidence of all this learning not only comes from the thoughtful discussion interwoven through the pages of this book but also from the following day where students applied their learning to a completely different activity. Three sight words were added to Mme Andrea's sight word chart but whether or not each student recognizes the sounds that form the word and can then read it is not the important part, it is the understanding of what those words mean that is of greater value here. Ask your child about hibernation, adaptation and migration...they'll have something interesting to say I'm sure! Our unit about earth cycles is about to wrap up, it has been a very interesting unit, engaging for the students and so much fun for Miss Andrea and I to teach. Yesterday, students began one of the final projects, making a book of only 4 pages with each page depicting a season. The book will be made in a few stages, beginning with the drawings, then adding the text and finally presenting the book to the class. They are already looking beautiful!
