Last week, we collected a few magazines and cut out images of what we considered living and non living things. Then we pasted the images on our activity sheet in the appropriate section. It was lots of work to practice using scissors but everyone tried their best and did a fantastic job!

Yesterday, Miss Andrea had the students sorting out a milk crate full of random things found in our classroom. The items consisted of toys, activities, books, games and sight word cards. The purpose was to sort them out into what the students thought of as play and not play. The broke up into two groups and had to discuss with their partner where they thought the item should go. If there was a disagreement or if they thought it could go both ways, they put it in the middle of their hula hoop makeshift Venn diagram. The results of their sorting was quite interesting! All the défi math games were put on the play side ;) Once they sorted all the items, we got together to explain some of our reasoning and to here the perspective of all the students. They then added to their brainstorm of what play is. Some of the words students used to describe what play was were: imaginative, not restricted, fun, building, games, things I like.
We have been talking about and discussing the concept of change throughout this unit, specifically as it pretains to natural cycles. Today we looked at different sports that are played in the winter, the summer (or warmer seasons) or both. How best can we sort this information, a Venn diagram! After reviewing how to use a Venn diagram, as we have used this graphic organizer before, students began cutting out the images and placing them accordingly.
Unrelated note, I am excited to share that this is the kindergarten blog's 500th post! Today, we sorted out various images into the season we thought it best fit. Some images were quite obvious but some, not so much. We had to look at clues in the images and discussed what we observed in the picture to figure out where exactly we thought it belonged. The pictures varied, from images of clothing, activities, celebrations, to food, plants and insects. There are lots of pictures left to sort which we will get to over the next week. Each student also got 4 blank squares to draw a picture representative of each season to add to our collection!
This morning, the students learned how to use a Venn diagram to sort. We each had a few pictures of items that could be found in a school or in a home. This is where using a Venn diagram to sort sounded like the perfect idea! Some of our items could be found in both! We took turns placing the pictures we had in the section we thought they should go in. According to the items we had pictures of, most of the items could be found in both. Looks like we have a lot in common with schools!
This week, we tested our knowledge about what trash goes where. I'm pleased to say that the students knew a lot about sorting the trash which means they are involved in this process at home! Great work everyone, as it says in the rhyme we learned, the earth will yell 'Hourra!'
