Last week, we worked on making patterns with actions and then representing the actions using both letters and beads. Each student took a turn doing an action pattern and then I wrote out the pattern on the table and we used the beads to represent each pattern. Once everyone had a turn to share an action pattern, we started making our own patterns using the beads and string. Working on math skills but fine motor skills as well!

Our three day activity was so much fun! Everyone loved every step, not just the eating cookies and candy part! Some of the gingerbread cookies made their way home, I hope you all got to have a try. From their little hands to you!
Here are the steps we followed:
Over the past week, we started to explore fractions, how they are used in our everyday lives and how fractions can relate to cycles discussed in our unit. Before our gingerbread making adventure, we doubled the recipe so as to have more than enough for everyone. Doubling the recipe was a lesson in addition as well as fractions, which I was sure to point out! The following day, we took a very close look at the cycles we have explored during the first part of our unit of inquiry and represented them using a fraction. The picture below is what the students came up with all on their own! I'm really impressed with how they were able to connect their understanding of fractions to the cycles we have been discussing. Great work!
A HUGE thank you to A and his family for organizing the Mad Science workshop! We experienced some pretty neat experiments and had loads of much fun! We learned about light and energy and made bouncy balls. We also found out that we had an alien in our class and found out who it was by using a UV light. Thanks again to A and family!
Last week, during a math centers period, students worked on completing levels of Logix, Mystero and making shapes on make shift geoboards. Logix and Mystero are games from Défi math used to develop logic, reasoning, number sense and the concept of process of elimination among other skills. With our make shift geo boards (for a fun change from the regular geoboard where we are slightly more constricted) students used push pins and elastics to make all sorts of interesting shapes. For the above mentioned Défi math games, students have their own progress chart where they can track the levels they have succeeded in completing. They get a little sticker on their progress chart to indicate completion and are always so proud when they finish a level!
Last week, the grade 6 students joined Mme Andrea's English class to help the kindergarteners think of and right down some of their characteristics on their personalized circle mat. Before breaking off into groups, they went around the circle sharing a characteristic about themselves. This really helped us better understand what describing ourselves means and also helped give us words to describe the qualities we feel represent us. Thanks to Mme Melissa and her grade 6 English class for joining us!
