The kids have been working very hard on their cities. Plasticine buildings, parks, signs, lakes and more, all made of plasticine and finally, the transportation systems that connect them all. After some discussion, checking out different books and exploring a variety of maps, it was time to develop our own little cities. The first task was to plan out where the homes, parks, etc would go and then to connect it all. We worked in two groups, each group chose a group leader and named their city. They drew using chalk on the table and once the plan was complete, the building began! All of their construction was inspired by their knowledge and creativity! Some more work has yet to be done but the cities are looking fantastic. Charlottetown and The City of Bamalikiko are the city names!

This week, we worked on breaking up transportation related vocabulary into different sound combonations. The students cut out little squares of paper and used those to write the sounds. Once they finished, they glued the words in their French journal. An activity thoughrouly enjoyed!
I don't know about you, but getting a hand written letter in the mail leaves me with a feeling of nostalgia! In elementary, my friends and I used to send each other letters by mail (yes, within Ottawa) and it was always very exciting to receive a letter written just for you...by good old fashioned mail! Since our unit is about transportation, it was a great time to use the letter and envelope cut-outs from our French workbook, Mélissa et ses amis. We talked about the mail delivery system, our need for it and how it is directly related to transportation and transportation systems.
The kids wrote their name on a piece of paper and picked names out of a hat (well it was a box). It was top secret information. We decided on what we wanted to write, drew a little picture and folded up our letters. All of this was very exciting, especially the part of keeping who we picked a secret. This was taken very seriously by some friends! In the envelopes our letters went, along with a stamp and the address of our friend. In art class, Mme France had the kids colour a post card to send as well. We went for a walk down Morrison Dr. and mailed our letters. They should be arriving soon! Let's do a poll of our favourite mode of transportation! After deciding on a few modes of transport and making sure we covered the three categories, land, sea and air, we went on our poll taking mission. Students bustled around the class asking their friends which they preferred from the selected few and recorded the answer. They then went on to the next part of the activity, representing the data they gathered. We used a pie chart template to graph the data and our information was ready to present. Now I would tell you what the preferred mode of transportation was among the ones we chose but somehow not everyone has the same final tally. Rest assured that all the graphs were completed accurately but I imagine that some silly friends changed the answer they gave from one poll taker to another. The activity was a success nonetheless!
