Today, we learned all about fractions! We talked about how we see fractions all around us. Even if we had not noticed before, they were there! Then, we completed a little booklet, filling in the circle according to the fraction that was written on the page. Once we were done, we explored the coloured fraction circles. At snack time, fractions came up as we were eating cut pieces of apples, making our morning lesson that much more relevant!

This mini lesson about fractions is not part of the usual term 1 JK math curriculum. A few other steps come before we begin learning about fractions. However...one of these little guys was quite interested in the fraction circles and wanted to learn about them, so why not. Fractions can be found everywhere and so cookies is how we made fractions relevant to us. We discussed a few scenarios where we had one cookie and 1, 2, 3 or 4 friends to share with. After a little discussion and modelling using the fraction circles, the students explored with the circles, independently. Thanks for inspiring this mini lesson, Mr. C. How many members are in your immediate family? We represented the answers using fractions! Students traced the circle container that hold our fraction circles, cut it out and then divided according to the number of family members they have. We discussed halves and wholes and thirds, quarters, fifths and more then we played with the fraction circles for a short bit until English class.
Over the past week, we started to explore fractions, how they are used in our everyday lives and how fractions can relate to cycles discussed in our unit. Before our gingerbread making adventure, we doubled the recipe so as to have more than enough for everyone. Doubling the recipe was a lesson in addition as well as fractions, which I was sure to point out! The following day, we took a very close look at the cycles we have explored during the first part of our unit of inquiry and represented them using a fraction. The picture below is what the students came up with all on their own! I'm really impressed with how they were able to connect their understanding of fractions to the cycles we have been discussing. Great work!
This week we had a great lesson on fractions. We started off by reading the book pictured to the left...silly, entertaining and...fantastic for making fractions relevant to the lives of kinder kids! Ask your kids about the story and see if they can retell it ;) After reading the book we cut out cake templates and decorated our very own cakes. Once our cakes were decorated, we cut them up into however many pieces we wanted and then wrote down a short sentence explaining how many pieces our cake was divided into. |
Welcome to the daily life of Académie de la Capitale's Junior / Senior Kindergarten class! We hope you enjoy this window into our classroom as much as we enjoy sharing it!Archives
