We used paper money to help us with some of the transactions and verified our answers using calculators.
This past week, we worked on the bank section of our Défi mathématique workbook. The section started with a short text talking about banks, their clientele and how banks are places where 1000's of mathematical operations happen on a daily basis. The following pages consisted of different transactions happening at the bank. Money in, money out...sometimes the result was negative...that is unfortunate ;p We used paper money to help us with some of the transactions and verified our answers using calculators.

We have finished reading the book 'Petit Camion Bleu' and have started our book study. We plan to make a little information booklet that will detail different things about 'Petit Camion Bleu' including the moral, the characters, words we found in the book and our favourite part. Today, we completed the page with words we found in the book. Some of the words were new to us, some were words that stood out and some were just words we remembered hearing. Stay tuned for the final product!
This week, we started our 5th unit, Getting Around. After having introduced the unit, we went to the library to search for related books. Next was the task of adding transportation related words to our word wall. We used our new books for some inspiration! Dictionaries were great help for words we knew in English but did not know in French! Once we double checked our spelling, we pinned the words to the board. The students are very proud when they see a word they wrote added to the wall ;) We continue working hard until our word wall is quite full but will continue adding to it as we go through the unit and learn new vocabulary. Some words make us laugh, like montgolfière, which we learned means hot air balloon. We show great phonetic spelling when we try and sound the words out on our own!
Excellent work!
The weather is getting warmer and March Break is here, the perfect time for annual winter walk at Stony Swamp. It is lovely to see the kids enjoying nature and also enjoying the time spent together. Our spring walk is just around the corner!
Last week, we worked on a few new, fun and exciting activities in math class! One of which was le château des nombres, our workshop with Mr Lyons was all about le château des nombres, ask your child about it! The workshop, which I hadn't posted about, was great. The kids had lots of fun and as always, Mr Lyons was super engaging and delivered a fantastic math workshop. We also started the bank section of the workbook. Money in and money out and all sorts of different operations that build our number sense, addition and subtraction skills. During our Play and Learn unit, we talked a lot about cooperation and solving conflict or disagreements in a positive and respectful manner. So this activity in Mélissa et ses amis was perfectly linked to what we had just spent time discussing! Each story had a dispute among friends for which a solution had to be found. In groups, the students discussed the problem and then wrote down words, sentences or drew pictures that represented a solution they came up with. Great work everyone! Now we have to remember to always implement these solutions should conflicts like these arise!
