We have been talking about the cycle of the seasons and learning to name the seasons in French and in the correct order. The kids coloured in the pages of the book and finished the sentence on the last page, their favourite season. Once they finished their books, we read it together. They were really excited about their little books, and rightfully so! Ask your child to tell you their favourite season, in French! And to name you the rest in French as well.

Last Friday, we went on a hunt in the school library for books related to our unit on community. We found quite a few, and brought them back to class to read and look at. After exploring some of the content in the books, we had a short discussion about what we learned while 'reading' them. Below are some of the student answers!
S.K. said, "I learned that there's actually lots of sickness in my book and the doctors in the community helped the turtle.". B.H. said, "Kids in different communities go on field trips, just like us." C.D.S. said, "I learned that there are police in other communities." K.B. said, "I learned that you can go to different places on earth in the world and see different communities.". This is the start of the JK class's book about what it means to be a friend. We will each add a few more pages about what we feel being a friend signifies and once we complete the pages and illustrations, we will put our book together!
Every Tuesday, we go to the library to borrow a book. The students have free rein in the library, they may choose any book their hearts desire and often sometimes end up choosing novels! Each book they borrow is written down on their blue library card and when we go to the library the following week, we can only get new book if we return the book we borrowed. We don't take them home, but if you are curious which book your child borrowed, you can find the library books and blue library cards in the newspaper basket at the front of our classroom!
Last week, we had our first writer's workshop. We talked about what an author is, about books and how some can have fictional stories, and some can have information. We also discussed how books don't always have to have pictures and don't always have to have words. We learned that all books have titles, authors and sometimes, illustrators. The students proceeded to make a book of their own. Other than needing to have their name and a title, they were free to be as creative! A few students finished their book during the allotted time and then shared their book with their peers.
Here is the beautiful pile of magical books from the public library! Lots to learn and discover about families and how some people document their family history as well.
