This week, we learned about the festivals in Japan that celebrate the healthy growth and happiness of children. Hina Matsuri (also called Dolls Festival) which is in celebration of young girls and Tango no Sekk, in celebration of boys. More recently, The Children's Festival has been called Kodomo-no-hi, in celebration of both boys and girls. We learned about why Koi fish were symbolic to this event and made our very own Koi fish. One of our students kindly shared a Koi fish craft he had done in his Japanese class as well as real Hina dolls!
There are many activities we do in the early years that teach the concept of multiplication as well as multiplication facts without the students even realising that is what they are learning. Much like what we were working on here. Students were asked to fill in a square or rectangle with specific dimensions and once they filled it in, they wrote out the mathematical phrase that represented what they drew. These activities were followed by similar activities in Défi mathématique where dimensions were given and a table was to be filled out according to those dimensions. It was very exciting for the students to discover that they knew or were learning multiplication. Once the mathematical phrase was complete, the connection was made!
This week, we learned what an acrostic poem was and made our very own with the word Célébration. With our own knowledge and related vocabulary, the help of books and other materials in our class and some peer collaboration we succeeded in creating lovely poems.
Multisensory techniques are frequently used for children with learning difficulties but are also an excellent way to reach every type of learner. The techniques, strategies, and activities used stimulate learning by engaging students on multiple levels and encouraging students to use some or all their senses. This is what we did with our pipecleaner sounds. In addition, it is quite fun!
