This is a game from our Défi Mathématique program. The purpose of the game is to end up with the ace all the way to 10 in the right order. Students start by shuffling the cards and placing them in a straight line, then... ...they start the game by flipping one of the cards (whichever card they desire that's in the row). Once they flip the card, they must place it in the proper spot... ...consequently taking the card in it's place and repeating until they have flipped all the cards and they are placed in order. There is one more little thing... ...if they take a card and it ends up in a spot that has no card to flip over, the game is over! Last year, we had the pleasure of having the co-founder/author of Défi Mathématique come in to our school and teach us the game himself! We will hopefully have him visit again this year, who better to learn the games from the the game inventor himself! The students enjoy this game very much :)

Students playing a game we all played and loved, Go Fish! It's really cute watching them realize certain strategies and also realizing that they can't show their cards! It's also funny seeing some students pick up on the fact that others are showing their cards and innocently ask for cards they know the other person has!
Here, students are engaging in Multisensory Teaching approach to develop their letter formation and sound recognition. Their are a few steps to this approach. First the students trace the letter with their finger using a variety of methods; one finger, two fingers and with their eyes closed. Then they do something we call 'sky writing' or 'écriture dans le ciel'. They do this by pointing their arm straight in front of them and writing the letter in the air. The students also use a tactile alphabet book to trace the letters. Once the students practice all these multisensory ways of writing the letter they are working on, they get their alphabet book and glue the image of that letter in their book, then is where the students practice writing the letter in their book. This is a great program that gives that gives these kindergarten students an excellent base for the next steps of cursive writing that they will do in grade 1 :) Here are two students playing two games that have been around for a long time, but the students of today will engage in these games in such a different way then we used to. Both ways are fun, one excites the children very much (the tablet of course) and with certain games, we really save on paper...the connect the dots for example!
_ Today was the first snowfall of the season and boy were the kids excited! Can't say as much for us adults, having to drive in it is not fun but the excitement of the children is quite contagious! To celebrate, we made paper snowmen. We started off by hunting for round things we could trace in the class. After we found enough, we started tracing circles to make the body of our snowmen. We then cut, glued and decorated! Here are some pics of our process :) |
