Last week, we started building our little model of a community. To start, we cut out cubes that were to represent a place in a community. Once we finish cutting and constructing our cubes, we will create the roads and place our community places on our map! This has also been a fantastic way to build our fine motor skills!

This past Wednesday, we had the pleasure of learning about how police officers play a role in our community from our assigned school officer , Constable Genevieve Hupe. She talked about how she also plays a role in our school community. Students had the opportunity to ask questions, and naturally, many of the questions had to do with her equipment! The students had a great time listening and learning from Constable Genevieve!
Last Friday, we went on a hunt in the school library for books related to our unit on community. We found quite a few, and brought them back to class to read and look at. After exploring some of the content in the books, we had a short discussion about what we learned while 'reading' them. Below are some of the student answers!
S.K. said, "I learned that there's actually lots of sickness in my book and the doctors in the community helped the turtle.". B.H. said, "Kids in different communities go on field trips, just like us." C.D.S. said, "I learned that there are police in other communities." K.B. said, "I learned that you can go to different places on earth in the world and see different communities.". We are starting to learn the French names for members of a community and their occupations. The word wall is filled with these words. We will use the word labels to copy the letters and practice our writing skills all while reinforcing the French vocabulary!
Today, we began filling in our community books. There are quite a few pages, so it will take us a bit of time to complete the books, so we can make sure that we are putting forth our best work! The first page is about our home, so our family community. Stay tuned for what the following pages will hold. We did go over them, so you can ask your child, I hope they remember!
