After our tour, we had the task of creating an art piece using collage and pencil crayons. Our inspiration was the piece by Howie Tsui! Once we were all done, we shared the story of our artwork with the whole group. Lots of great and creative stories!
Our first week back to school was busy and full of fun activities. During our trip to the Ottawa Art Gallery, we were taken on a tour of a few of their exhibits and afterwards, we worked on our own art activity. We learned about the Group of Seven and their landscape art and also analysed a few pieces that were more modern in their representation of landscapes. We looked at some abstract art and our tour guide, Chole, pointed out how the painting techniques used in different styles of paintings varied; big strokes, little strokes, splats! We found out that some artists express themselves in their self portraits in a variety of ways and also learned about mixed media. We took a very close look at a painting by Howie Tsui that represented a scary story he was told by his grandmother when he was little. After our tour, we had the task of creating an art piece using collage and pencil crayons. Our inspiration was the piece by Howie Tsui! Once we were all done, we shared the story of our artwork with the whole group. Lots of great and creative stories!

This activity took a few days to finish. We started by making the black circles using paint and a plastic cup. The next day, the circles were dry and ready for more painting. We only used the three primary colours to create all the colours you see in the pictures. We will put up our canvases in the class, come check them out during pick up or drop off time!
Getting messy manipulating clay and exploring the tools that we will later use to create imaginative sculptures for our third unit! The clay is very different from regular play dough, something we are more familiar with and we learned that if we leave it for too long, it starts to dry and leaves cracks when we try to mold it. A little spray of water did the trick to bring it back to life.
One of the ways we travel around our community is by car so our tracks would symbolize how we are connected to one another, right? Yes! This activity certainly aided students reflect on how different members of a community or places in a community are connected. We started by deciding what placed we wanted in our community and traced different shapes to represent those places. Then, we got our cars and drove around to the different places leaving behind painted tire tracks!
Kindergarten Community Tracks Activity by Slidely Slideshow This week, we learned about the festivals in Japan that celebrate the healthy growth and happiness of children. Hina Matsuri (also called Dolls Festival) which is in celebration of young girls and Tango no Sekk, in celebration of boys. More recently, The Children's Festival has been called Kodomo-no-hi, in celebration of both boys and girls. We learned about why Koi fish were symbolic to this event and made our very own Koi fish. One of our students kindly shared a Koi fish craft he had done in his Japanese class as well as real Hina dolls!
This week in art class, students made window decals, the theme, transportation! After choosing the mode of transportation they wanted to make, Mme France drew an outline on wax paper. They coloured regular school glue, poured it into squeeze bottles and filled in the outline. Some sweet sparkles were added and voilà, now to let them dry!
