Marbles and paint make for some pretty beautiful artwork. Students had fun dipping their marbles in a colour of their choice, scooping up the marble and rolling it around in their tray.

This activity concluded a short exploration of trees throughout the seasons. In English class, we looked through various books about seasons and discussed our observations of all the different pictures of trees as well as any other markers that led us to believe a specific season was being depicted in the image. We labeled the pictures with the season we believed it represented and used those books as a reference before beginning this activity. With mostly open ended craft materials, students decorated trees of their own and labeled them accordingly. Later, we will staple our pages together creating a book of trees and present our book to the class
Over the past few weeks, students have been working on using descriptive vocabulary to describe themselves. Every few days, we would sit by our hanging silhouettes of the upper half of our body and share things about ourselves and our peers. I wrote them down and today, we painted our silhouettes. Now, we will go over all the things we shared about ourselves and our peers and write them around the painted silhouettes. Our painting choices were meant to be realistic, or how we saw ourselves, so with a paint palette of multiple colours and a mirror to look at ourselves, we painted away!
What can we make with all the items from our recycling center? This is what I asked the students yesterday morning. We dumped all the bins out and everyone took a few minutes to think of what they could build or how they could reuse some of the items we had collected. There were no limitations and no instructions other than make whatever you want! Some extras like tissue paper, paint and glue were added to the mix. Some of the creations were very practical, for example, a straw holder and some were more artsy. There was also a submarine, a pirate ship and a boat...very creative!
After completing a group activity about the different feelings we relate to colours we were ready to closely observe some of Wassily Kandinsky's art that I had posted on our chalkboard. The objective was to examine each piece and determine how it made us feel. Once we determined the feelings we felt after studying each piece, we stuck a smiley (or not so smiley) face underneath it. Later, we will collect some data based on the smiley faces on the board! We learned some new French vocabulary related to emotions and practiced expressing how we feel in French.
Our mixed media self portraits are complete, you may have noticed them posted on the bulletin board by the office. It was a really great activity that allowed us to reflect a bit about the things we liked, who we are and then expressed that through art. Even more importantly, we were able to better understand that artists make their art with a purpose and that there is meaning behind what we see on, for example, a canvas.
