These silhouettes were done over a period of time. We started by tracing the upper part of our body and then pinned the silhouettes to the wall. Every few days, we would go over and think about what we like, our qualities and the qualities of our friends and then I would right it down on the silhouette. It took lots of reflecting and also putting words to how we felt about ourselves and each other. Expressing ourselves in this way took some careful thought. The next step was to paint the silhouettes, but not with just any colour and not just in any way, we used a mirror to look closely at our features and the colour of our eyes, hair and skin and then coloured accordingly. Now you, moms and dads, have the task of guessing who is who based on what is written about each student. Good luck!

This week, we learned how to use unifix cubes to help us add. We chose from the various addition cards and represented the equation using the cubes. We then recorded the equation on our own activity sheets. All the equations added up to 10 or less, before no time we will be quite good at adding numbers up to 10 in our head. Mental math!
Yesterday, students worked on their scissor skills and used their creativity in an activity where the end product was going to be a tangram book made by them! They cut out the 7 magical tangram shapes and then arranged and glued them down in any way they chose. They then told me what they made with their shape and I wrote it on their page. The book is now put together and available in the math center along with plastic tangram shapes. Students can recreate what they made or what their friends made!
Once they were finished the activity, they took out their scribble duotangs and practiced their drawing and writing. Their scribble duotangs are an opportunity for them to practice their fine motor skills and draw or write whatever they want! They very much enjoy the freedom of their 'anything book'! Part of English class today consisted of a game where students had to jump to each circle and read the sight word. They did so well that Mme Andrea had to add more circles and more words! Great work everyone!
Over the past few weeks, students have been working on using descriptive vocabulary to describe themselves. Every few days, we would sit by our hanging silhouettes of the upper half of our body and share things about ourselves and our peers. I wrote them down and today, we painted our silhouettes. Now, we will go over all the things we shared about ourselves and our peers and write them around the painted silhouettes. Our painting choices were meant to be realistic, or how we saw ourselves, so with a paint palette of multiple colours and a mirror to look at ourselves, we painted away!
Below, you will notice that students were working on breaking down a number, more specifically the number 5, but there is a backstory! The plate being made up is for Mr 5 and Mr 5 does NOT like any amount of food on his plate other than 5 pieces. The students were hired at the restaurant to make Mr 5 a menu of all the possible combinations of 5 pieces of food, pasta and meatballs. I told them that Mr 5 would not be happy if his order wasn't correct and they went on to say that they would be fired from the restaurant if it wasn't acceptable to Mr 5...they came up with that all on their own! ;) Well Mr 5 was quite pleased with his menu options and all was well!
