Today, we also listened to the alphabet song a couple of times, at the request of the students! And then made our alphabet mountain. Making the mountain took lots of effort, all the letters were scattered on the ground, one friend at a time would find the letter that came after the last and would place it on the board. Now we know that there are 26 letters in the alphabet and that M & N is right in the middle!
During both English and French lessons, we are learning about the vowels and their sounds. If you have heard your child say something about Angry Elephants In Orange Underpants, it is from English class! In French, we have read three stories from 'Raconte moi l'alphabet'. The story about the little girl named 'a' that had a cavity, the little boy named 'e' that has a very bad memory, and the acrobat mouse named 'i'. We will reread the stories several times over the year and do the corresponding activity to reinforce the letter sounds. Next up is the letter 'o'. This morning, we began discussing what makes a living thing living. We determined that we air was vital but did not quite agree if water was essential or not (maybe a little science experiment will help us figure this one out!). After our discussion, we made our very own living things. The instructions were, be creative! Once the students were done, they had to explain what it was and share some details as to what it needs to be healthy and grow.
Yesterday, each class took their turn to shuck the corn for our Corn Roast yesterday evening. It's hard but satisfying work! Thank you for being such great helpers, Erick (or chef friend), sure is grateful!
We have now had our first two STEM classes with the Senior Kindergarten students. During our first class, we read a book titled, 'The MOST MAGNIFICENT Thing'. It's a great little book that relates to the subject at hand. Then, we talked about what STEM meant, we learned that it is an acronym and we did a little brainstorm to see what we know about each of the the words that make up STEM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING and MATHEMATICS). Each week, we'll briefly discuss what the words mean and add any new information we learn to our STEM description chart.
We also built cubes using marshmallows and toothpicks. As we were building, some of our cubes were tilting to one side. We talked about how we could build a stable structure and how we needed to ensure that the joints (or corners as they were also called) were secure and strong. During the second STEM class, we finished up our cubes, in case they were not quite complete, and then tested their strength by placing a light book on them. This little activity was the perfect end to our math lesson yesterday. We started by learning how to play the game Mystero. Mystero is a game from the collection of kindergarten Défi math games. It teaches children to see numbers in abstract ways and develops arithmetic comprehension and reasoning skills. Once we completed a few cards as a group, we played the game pictured below. Super easy and low maintenance! It involved listening and searched for the number called out and then jumping, hopping or moving in any silly way to the correct number on the carpet. When I was writing the numbers down on the carpet, one of the students told me that Miss Crystal was going to be upset with me for writing on the ground, such principled students!
Last week, we collected a few magazines and cut out images of what we considered living and non living things. Then we pasted the images on our activity sheet in the appropriate section. It was lots of work to practice using scissors but everyone tried their best and did a fantastic job!
