To start, the song below is our morning circle song. We sing it all together (without the video, but the exact same song) and then I go around the circle to greet each child by saying 'bonjour' and then as them 'comment ça va, aujourd'hui?'.
To simplify the JK website and blog, I decided to delete the music page and to post in the blog, songs we are learning or singing together in the class. Each blog post about French music will be tagged so it will be easy to find under the side bar. This way, you may have a better idea of what your child is humming in the evening! And, possibly listen to the music with them as well. To start, the song below is our morning circle song. We sing it all together (without the video, but the exact same song) and then I go around the circle to greet each child by saying 'bonjour' and then as them 'comment ça va, aujourd'hui?'.

Today's unit of inquiry activity was all about our needs vs our wants. Each student got a few yellow sticky notes and a few blue sticky notes. On the yellow, they were asked to draw a picture of something they needed to grow and be healthy. On the blue sticky note, things that they wanted but would still survive without.
There were some interesting conversations that came up when they explained their reasoning. Something that I loved to see was the addition of winter clothing to the needs side of the chart, which is very true! Another interesting choice of one of the students was a pillow that they thought should be placed in the needs side of the chart. After much discussion, the pillow went over to the wants side! Today, Mme Katie helped reinforce our understanding of our unit topic by completing the chart pictured below. After choosing the object/animal on the left, the students answered the questions in the headings to determine if it was living or not. Mr. C noticed the yes - no patterns in each column too! We have been working on patterns during our math lessons!
Last week, we had our first writer's workshop. We talked about what an author is, about books and how some can have fictional stories, and some can have information. We also discussed how books don't always have to have pictures and don't always have to have words. We learned that all books have titles, authors and sometimes, illustrators. The students proceeded to make a book of their own. Other than needing to have their name and a title, they were free to be as creative! A few students finished their book during the allotted time and then shared their book with their peers.
Today, we learned about patterns and how we can find them all around us, we even saw some examples in our classroom. Then we practiced making patterns using images of animals. First, we went through the animals to learn their names in French, some we already knew! Some more practice and we will become experts in making ABABAB patterns! Afterwards, we practiced our scissor skills and cut up some of the extra animal pictures. This is what the JK students were up to during their outdoor recess today! They made a bonfire, grabbed some chairs, placed them around the bonfire, sat down, started chatting, and ate roasted marshmallows. Yum.
