Yesterday we made fancy greater than and less then symbols. We glued and decorated our symbols and then used them in the math center to make mathematical expressions. We explored different expressions using number cards and manipulatives. Today we had a mini written test where the numbers where given but we had to fill in the appropriate symbol. The kids were excited about the fact that their sheet was top secret and no one could see it and that they couldn't look at their neighbours sheet! It was quiet...for a few minutes ;) but they were hard at work and had fun doing their 'test'!

Wednesday evening is our Annual Corn Roast and Meet the Teacher Night and the AcadeCap tradition has been to have the students husk the corn the day before. As I always teach the younger students, the question 'When do we get to eat the corn?!' remains the same from year to year! After all, they do work hard to husk that corn! So join us tomorrow night so they may enjoy the fruits of their labour! Also important to note that we were the last class to finish up and without even asking, they started picking up the husk that didn't land in the garbage and gladly helped bring everything back upstairs! Super kids!
This morning we worked together to make a timeline with pictures of children and toys from the 1930's to the 1990's. After cutting out the pictures, we wrote down the years (counting by ten's) and confirmed their order. A string from one side of the class to the other would serve as our timeline and clothes pins to hang up the pictures. We hung them up in the appropriate decade and our timeline was complete...until we decide to add more pictures of course! Then it was time for analysing the pictures and discussing what we saw, what seemed different and what seemed similar to our childhood. There were a few kids that found it so interesting that rather than grabbing a book during our sustained reading period, they pulled up a chair and looked at the pictures, analysing them in depth! Below are a few pictures of the process including the poster we made with all our observations. Looking forward to doing a similar activity with the childhood pictures of parents and grandparents of the class! Last week we began our French workbook, Mélissa et ses amis. We read the introduction together and looked at the picture prompts that will help us read instructions in the pages to follow. We learned the names of the two main characters that will appear throughout the book, which I find fantastic! It will make thee learning in this book personal and fun!
Just a note to please ensure these books stay at school. Thank you! Stay tuned for more adventures with Mélissa and her dog Médor! Our 'Mur de mots' is one of the many ways we develop unit related French vocabulary. Some words are new and some we already know! At the beginning of each unit as well as during the unit, we will add to the board. We decided to pin the words up in alphabetical order for a little extra fun! Towards the end of the unit, we will choose a few words for our dictée and practice them at school. The words we have so far are listed below. Feel free to read them with your child(ren) at home!

This morning in English class, students looked at what a central idea is and talked about our current unit's central idea which is The experience of childhood has changed over time, but some things have remained the same. The focus being childhood, the students began brainstorming words that they related to childhood and what they thought childhood represented. We will do a similar activity in French and we will look the students will have a better based to begin investigating the similarities and differences between childhood over time. |
