The University of Ottawa's Maker Mobile workshops were one of the best workshops I have experienced in my time working with kids! Their staff were so great with the young children; friendly and knew how to engage young kids! The kindergarten class has now had a great intro to programming using the application called Scratch Jr. The grade 1/2 class are already quite proficient so they got some extra tips and practice and created some creative programs that they shared towards the end of the workshop. I will certainly be looking into more of their workshops for later this year! Enjoy the video!

Great job everyone! I am especially proud of all the work the kindergarten class did!
The Rube Goldberg fair is coming up and while we are not participating in the contest we will still be making a very simple machine. Our machine will not exceed 5 steps and I am confident we will be able to accomplish this! This morning, I showed the kids the videos below and once they watched them, they had some pretty fantastic comments that demonstrated a beginning understanding of what a Rube Goldberg machine is. We came up with some ideas of materials we could use and we will start experimenting with some ideas shortly!
Check these videos out at home with your child and discuss the project further. I'll ask everyone about the ideas they discussed with mom and/or dad.
Below is our time lapse video for the chick project! We are very fortunate to have been able to capture the process with the iPads! Special thanks to Mme Carter for her tech expertise and for creating the video!
What's more fun than using marshmallows as a tool to build with...nothing by the sound of the excitement in the kids voices when I introduced the activity! Tooth picks, marshmallows and instructions to be creative led to all the fabulous structures pictured below. This activity fosters the student's creativity while developing skills in math and science. That classifies as a STEM activity ;) |
Welcome to the daily life of Académie de la Capitale's Junior / Senior Kindergarten class! We hope you enjoy this window into our classroom as much as we enjoy sharing it!Archives
