A few little experiments to further explore the proof of air's existence and to determine some of the properties of air. Before we started each experiment, we made some informed guesses as to what we thought would happen. We found out that air takes up space, has mass, exerts pressure and can work to do different things! After completing all 3 experiments, we filled out our worksheet describing the results. Sentences or pictures detailing our new knowledge! Thank you C.B. for taking a few of those pictures!
A great morning spent with Marie-Hélène of Scientists in Schools. After a short introduction, the students separated into groups and explored each station. A big thank you to the grade 8 students for helping out and being responsible for the stations!
The big question: DOES AIR TAKE UP SPACE? To find the answer to our question, we did this fun experiment. The students knew that if, after inserting the cup straight into the water, the cotton ball got wet that the answer would be no and if not, well that air does indeed take up space. Before conducting the experiment, they predicted what would happen, they filled in their science experiment information sheet and were ready to go! We had also previously discussed whether they thought air took up space and the students signed their names on a poster sheet indicating their answer. Well, let me tell you that there was only one student that thought it did so the discovery that air took up space was quite the revelation ;) After discussing what we know about air and what we want to know about air we came to realize that we do know that air is composed of oxygen but we don't know if there is anything else in the composition of air. So then the pie chart was introduced. We have looked at other data graphs but have not explored the world of pie charts yet. Perfect opportunity! Using paper plates, we cut out the flat circular interior of the plate and then made a dot in the center. Using the printout as a guide we marked the sections and labelled away!
If you are a parent of one of the students in our class, you already know that the butterflies came out of their cocoon and that today we released them outside! During their one week stay in our classroom, we did lots of observing and learning. One pretty neat thing that we got to see was how butterflies eat! We learned that instead of the usual insect mouth, butterflies have a long, thin tube which they use to suck up nectar and other liquids. We put orange slices in their aquarium and watched as they sucked up the sweet juices. Some students pointed out that our butterflies looked very similar to monarch butterflies...this is very true, same colours on the upper part of their wings and neutral colours on the other side. Could be used as camouflage against predators...better look that up!
The butterfly release was really fun, at first it was a challenge to get the butterflies to come up onto our fingers but we got the hang of it! Mme Stephanie's toddlers happened to be in the playground at the same time so they joined in! Some butterflies really didn't want to leave! I think they sensed our love for them ;) Enjoy the video! |
