Today we talked about making patterns, but not just any pattern, complex patterns such as AABBCC, ABBC or AABBC! We started off by doing action patterns. We clapped our hands, stomped our feet, tapped our heads and knees and even the carpet. The students came up with their own action pattern and then led the class. Afterwards, we had some fun making patterns with beads and pipe cleaners. Since we were talking about complex patterns, the students were instructed to do just that. One student even made an ABCDEFG pattern, she really loves colours, I think she may have just wanted to use them all! She was able to repeat the pattern 3 times in one pipe cleaner and she was very proud! In a following activity later on, I will have students spot patterns around the school. Where can we possibly find a pattern? Perhaps on a tiled floor or the little images on their name tags at their table spots, maybe on a toy or the carpet! Patterns are everywhere! In mathematics, patterning is very important because it is, among others, a critical building block to developing algebraic thinking. Patterning is used in predicting, comprehending and problem solving. As the students move up in grade levels, patterns will be related to concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. After looking at patterns around our school and having done many colour patterns with various objects, the students will be exposed to patterns using blocks with different attributes, size patterns and number patterns. All this pattern talk makes me realize just how much they are everywhere...and important ;) Making patterns in the math center! Right now we just have squares in the pattern chart, but we we will complicate things a little by adding different shapes to make more complex patterns ;) M made all these patterns himself! The girls work together to make some patterns!
