This mini lesson about fractions is not part of the usual term 1 JK math curriculum. A few other steps come before we begin learning about fractions. However...one of these little guys was quite interested in the fraction circles and wanted to learn about them, so why not. Fractions can be found everywhere and so cookies is how we made fractions relevant to us. We discussed a few scenarios where we had one cookie and 1, 2, 3 or 4 friends to share with. After a little discussion and modelling using the fraction circles, the students explored with the circles, independently. Thanks for inspiring this mini lesson, Mr. C.

I thought that this was an important to share as it shows how students demonstrate understanding of the topics discussed in class through their play and teacher observations and anecdotes are one of the ways we assess learning.
The three girls below were playing with the alphabet puzzle. They took out all the pieces and then took turns showing a piece ans asking whether it was a living or non-living thing. The game they were playing was initiated by them during free play time, they were taking what we are learning in class and transferring it to their play while also showing evidence of their learning. They were also practicing cooperation skills and turn taking, very nicely if I may add! Today, we officially began our experiment for the science fair. Each grown plant and each glass pot with a pea seed is labelled to show what we are watering it with. Today, I modelled just how much of each liquid we should water the plants and growing seeds with and going forward, the students will be responsible for it. Every few days, we will observe the plants to see what's happening! We will document our observations and the changes in our science journals.
Last week, we discovered that mixing the primary colours results in so much magic! We also listened to the song below this video, all about the 3 primary colours. Below are a few student questions and teacher questions that will kick off our inquiry into living things in our homes and classrooms and our responsibility towards them. You can be involved be discussing the topic with your child. If you have a pet or plants in your home, you can talk about the care you provide it in order for it to grow and be healthy. We had a discussion around the 2nd question from the top, and, with a little suggestion on my part, we decided we would do a science experiment to find out the answer. We also thought it would be a good idea if we tried a few other liquids, milk water and apple juice to be specific. This will be our science fair project!
In order to determine the various needs and possible wants of living things, we need to first identify the difference between the two. Through observing the students during their hunt for living and non-living things around the class, I learned that they are pretty much experts at at this and now we are on to step two. We are going to look at what makes a living thing living and later, explore how we are responsible for the living things in our homes and classrooms.
