This game was played two ways today. Some of us rolled dice with numbers on them and used the bingo daubers to represent the number rolled and some of us rolled dice and added the two numbers together as well as wrote down the mathematical sentence. Team work, turn taking and dabbing fun!

Mirrors have some cool uses in kindergarten. We can learn about addition, symmetry, use them for self portraits and more I'm sure! This morning, the kindergarten students used mirrors to explore counting and addition. They chose shapes or figures, counted the amount they chose and then counted the amount that included the reflection! Now that the mirrors and what we can use them for have been introduced, the students can explore them during free play time!
A short, impromptu activity about measurement. Each student had a partner and had to measure their partners feet using foam cubes from our math center. We recorded our results on the chalk board and looked at who had the biggest and smallest feet and whose feet measured the same. Mine were the biggest, we found out ;)
This past week, we worked on the bank section of our Défi mathématique workbook. The section started with a short text talking about banks, their clientele and how banks are places where 1000's of mathematical operations happen on a daily basis. The following pages consisted of different transactions happening at the bank. Money in, money out...sometimes the result was negative...that is unfortunate ;p
We used paper money to help us with some of the transactions and verified our answers using calculators. Skip counting is important in the development of fluency in calculation, number sense and as the basis of multiplication and division. Students begin by mastering skip counting from zero and then start to master skip counting from any number. We started off this activity by brainstorming what we could use to help us learn how to count by 5's. It became very apparent that these kids are truly the tech generation by the answers I got...all technology related! I was looking for something a little more simple...fingers! Although they still had great ideas ;) So we traced our hands, coloured and cut them out and then put them all together to make a counting by 5's poster. Et voila, poster to the left
A few of the math activities that students were freely exploring during our afternoon math period! Enjoy ;)
