We hope that Mme Marta is feeling better soon and so because we had an extra period today due to music class being cancelled, we played in a few math and French centers. This also gave us an opportunity to do some one-to-one work with Mme Nora! We spelled words at the word wall, tried building sentences, some very silly ones too and played a few of our Défi math games.

Last week, we celebrated v-day by baking cupcakes and having an afternoon tea party. The long anticipated activity was loads of fun and a moderate amount of sugar...sorry! Thanks to Erick for providing tea sandwiches! I think we will have to make the afternoon tea party a yearly tradition! The best thing to do with so many paper scraps is to make new paper! That is exactly what we did with all the scraps from another a previous activity. We soaked the paper in water overnight and the following day, we blended the paper, added sparkles and used the screens and felt pads pictured below to make new sheets of paper. A few days to fully dry and our beautifully pressed new paper will be ready for whatever our hearts desire! Now this had nothing to do with our current unit of inquiry but is a great learning opportunity to demonstrate how we can reuse what is essentially garbage to make something new.
Some pretty imaginative play was happening here! A school called l'école de coup where I was named étoile and had to go on a time out because I wasn't cutting my plasticine very well...tough teacher. There were cookies being baked at school and we had to be very careful not to burn ourselves on the purple oven rack. A collection of models being made on the side and lots of laughs!
Tuning in and using our sense of taste to figure out what we were eating turned out to be a really funny activity. Silence filled the room as the blindfolded child tasted the mystery food, everyone looked on in excitement and anticipation! Throughout the activity, students had the task of filling a chart to show whether they liked or disliked the food they tasted and I filled out a larger chart to record how many guesses students got right or wrong. We were risk takers, we were brave and we were enthusiastic during this activity!
The conclusion is...we love to cook! Today's pumpkin soup adventure was so much fun. We enjoyed every minute of it, from chopping onions that made us cry to doing dishes to immersing ourselves in library books while the soup finished cooking. The result, delicious soup! Pumpkin Soup
1 Tbsp. butter or margarine 1 lg. onion, chopped 2 potatoes, peeled & chopped 1 c. pumpkin puree 3 c. chicken stock (bouillon is fine) 1 c. milk or light cream – we used coconut milk, but 1%, 2%, or homo is fine 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. salt ground pepper, nutmeg & cayenne to taste – we didn’t put the cayenne in Melt butter, add onion & cook until transparent. Add potato, pumpkin, & chicken stock. Bring to boil & simmer, covered, until vegetables are tender. Puree until smooth. Add milk, reheat. Add spices. Can garnish with toasted pumpkin seeds, chopped chives or green onions. |
