Today, we completed our first official Scratch Jr lesson! We learned about some of the different commands and how to add and delete characters and backgrounds. Our task was to delete Scratch the cat the is automatically part of a new program and add our own character, then add a background. Once we did this, we had to give our character a few commands, to shrink and then to drive across the city. We were successful in making our first program! |

A few pics of phys ed activities with Mme Mélanie. The parachute is always so much fun and a classic!
Community places and math collide in this fun activity! We projected images of places in a community on a white paper and looked for shapes, then we traced them. After we found as many shapes as we could, we took away the projection to see what we found, a lot of shapes. Turns out, shapes are everywhere. Afterwards, I was hearing the kids notice different shapes in our classroom and around the school! Super fun activity! This activity is one from Défi math that helps us learn how to decompose numbers. There is always a silly component and one that children can usually relate to. In this case, we were making a menu for Mr. 5 who wanted to eat a fruit salad of just strawberries and blueberries. He only wanted 5 pieces of fruit so we had to think of all the ways we could offer him 5 pieces of fruit. We then wrote down the options, hopefully he was satisfied!
One of the ways we travel around our community is by car so our tracks would symbolize how we are connected to one another, right? Yes! This activity certainly aided students reflect on how different members of a community or places in a community are connected. We started by deciding what placed we wanted in our community and traced different shapes to represent those places. Then, we got our cars and drove around to the different places leaving behind painted tire tracks!
Kindergarten Community Tracks Activity by Slidely Slideshow A physical representation of how different members of our community are connected to each other. With a pile of strings in the center of our circle and each student representing a member of the community, it was time to find out if we could use the services of any particular person and if or how they could help us. Depending on the answer, we would grab a string and both parties would hold one end to symbolize the connection. We did this a few times, trading and changing the community member we were representing. We realised that we are indeed connected to our community in many ways, but not always. For example, not everyone is directly connected to a veterinarian because they may not have a pet. It ended up being quite the challenge to hold on to all the strings by the end of the activity!
