So many discoveries happen when we are playing outside! Today we found a hole in a tree. We guessed what could possibly live inside?! The most probable guess was a bird, some other imaginative guesses were an owl or a groundhog, very unlikely ;) This led some of the students to investigate the other trees in the playground, they were very curious as to what they could find! This led some of the students to investigate the other trees in the playground, they were very curious as to what they could find! Well, we didn't find any other holes but we did find spider nests! It looked like the spiders babies were gone as the weather is getting cold...another inquiry, were do spiders go when it's cold...we'll find out!

What shapes can you see? _Today we did a fun shape activity that one of my students called 'magic'. I projected an image on the white board and asked the students what shapes they saw, well they saw many shapes! From triangles to cubes, cylinders to diamonds. When they pointed out a shape, I traced it with a dry erase marker and after finding enough shapes, I removed the projected image, leaving behind all the shapes we saw. It was a fun and engaging activity that the students enjoyed! The students concluded that everything is made out of shapes...everything! This is the above image after the projected image was taken away. We could have gone on forever, well until we drew the whole image! Here is an image before we traced the shapes... ...and here is the image after we traced the shapes! Later on in the day, some students pointed out other shapes they saw in objects around the school. For example the hand dryer, apparently it's a cube ;) This activity allowed students to look at everyday objects, and everything around them, in a different way. Rather than seeing the plate with their lunch on it, they saw a circle. It allowed the students to see things with a different perspective.
So many shapes! Sorting, tallying and graphing was how we found out exactly how many we had! Masks, they could be cultural, decorative, for theater or just for fun. One thing they have in common is that they all cover your face. Today we read a book about all types of masks, all used for different purposes and made with different materials. After reading the book about masks, we went on a mask adventure and created our own. We used all sorts of materials and most importantly, we used our imagination! Wearing a masks lets us transform into whoever we want to be, it lets our imagination run wild. Some of us were super heroes and some princesses, some of us were astronauts and when we wore our mask, it helped us blast into space. Some of us were nothing specific, rather a mask that was more like a transformer that could transform into whatever it wanted whenever it wanted, it was not tied down to any one form...or idea! These masks fed our imagination, made us fly where possibilities were endless and there were no rules. This place is indeed our imagination! _The beautiful thing about children is that they don't really need these masks to fly to where possibilities are endless and to where there are no rules. The masks just act as a tool that gives permission to go there. Children use their imagination all the time, in play, in creative arts, even in math. It is our job to encourage it and play along with them. It is with our imagination that we think outside the box, accept different perspectives and solve unsolvable problems. It is also with our imagination that we know anything is possible, where we develop confidence and where we create magic! Imagine anything :) Happy children typing away! Here, the students are playing typing games made for kindergarten students. Learning proper typing technique and reinforcing letter recognition...at the same time! A great website for kids, introduced to us by our ICT teacher, Mlle Carter!
Simple addition using manipulatives. Today we counted by twos and added numbers equalling up to 16 with little wooden sticks!
