Now that our personal 'Number of the Week' sheets are laminated, the fun can begin! Each week, a specific student gets to choose a number from 1-10 as the number of the week. We then go on to represent this number in a few different ways. Writing it, making tally marks, filling in a ten frame, finding the number on a number line and finally, using shapes to represent the number...circles seemed to be popular although they had the freedom to choose what they wanted! Today, the chosen number was ten! Check back to see what next weeks number will be! Better late than never to share the pictures of our amazing trip to Saunders Farm last week! It couldn't have been planned on a more beautiful fall day...we were lucky! From hayrides to a puppet show to learning about pumpkins and harvest, we will definitely be back. Check out Mme Mélanie's blog < http://acadecapexplorers.weebly.com/1/post/2013/10/a-great-time-at-saunders-farm.html > for more details about our day and enjoy the slideshow below! :) Onto Part 2 of our activity! After having talked about where different food comes from (where it grows, how far it travels and how it travels) it was time to sort some fruit of our own! We had two groups, one for fruits that took a plane to get her and one that came by truck. The students each picked a fruit and placed it in the group they thought it belonged. After our sorting session, we had a buffet of fruit to try! From dragon fruit to pineapple to pears! It was a blast! Check out some picks and don't forget to check out Mme Mélanie's blog to find out about part 3...the STAMPING! To realize how far some food travels from a farm to our home, we did a little activity placing different fruits, veggies and grains on our world map. We talked about how certain food does not grow in our region and therefore goes on a long trip to get to our local grocery store. This was an activity that took a few periods to complete. Starting with our very own 'mail', personalized envelopes containing pictures of different fruits/veggies/grains. We then coloured, cut and placed the pictures on our map. The kids loved getting their 'mail'! I think that may have been a highlight of the activity ;) Next we will sample some of these local and exotic foods! |
