Students molded and shaped ceramics clay to create their very own unique caterpillars. They used cool art tools to carve out details and had to work at a steady pace in order for the clay not to dry out. I would like to go into more detail...but I'm not the art teacher!

So an update on our caterpillars...well now they have formed their cocoon! Our classroom is full of life! Chicks, caterpillars, growing plants and our resident fish! It didn't take long for the caterpillars to form their cocoon, approximately 5 days. We transferred them into a large aquarium rather than the mesh cage that came in our package so we could better see the process. Mme Alex was so kind to have helped us with that. Now they are hanging from branches and we can see their every move! The cocoons are quite beautiful. If you look closely, especially with a magnifying glass, you will see the incredible detail. Perhaps we will have to take out our microscope and observe the cocoon once the butterfly is out! Lets cross our fingers that they wait for after the long weekend to come out of the cocoons! I will be at school to check up and take pictures/videos just in case ;)
Acadecap students had a fabulous time yesterday during our nature walk and scavenger hunt at Stony Swamp. The weather was fantastic and the fresh air was quite refreshing. Mme Alex found a baby lizard on a tree trunk, that was super cool! We found slimy algea that may or may not have had some sort of eggs in it...??? Different birds and lots of cool plants! The kids were particularly intrigued by a plant they found with fuzzy leaves which I believe is called a lambs ear. Climbing trees, find special rocks, chatting wit friends across the ages, it was a great morning!
To further experience a life cycle first hand, we decided to order a butterfly kit from West Lab. They offer kits that include all you need to care for and observe the transformation of a caterpillar to a butterfly! The kit arrived yesterday and the excited students got right to work. We checked out what came in the kit, read the instructions, took a look at the life cycle book that was part of the package and inspected the caterpillars before we put them into their individual vials with their caterpillar food. Each student had a chance to put a caterpillar in a vial, and naturally they named their caterpillar! After the caterpillars make their cocoon, we are supposed to transfer the lid of the vial that will have the cocoon attached and gently secure it to the butterfly cage. Stay tuned to see the progress and make sure to ask your kids all about it! The kids love singing this song! It is quite sweet and also relevent to our topic ;) Have them sing it to you!
Yesterday afternoon, the kids had the task of helping paint the white picket fence that the school will be using for multiple purposes. The first being this weekends Baby Show! AcadeKidz, Acadecap's daycare, will have a booth at the Baby Show...that I will be running for part of the weekend along with other teachers/educators and Academie de la Capitale's fabulous marketing expert ;)
So enough with that, lets get to the fun part...the painting! The kids each got one panel to paint in which ever creative way they wished. The results were fantastic! I think you all should have your kids paint your fences at home ;p But seriously, a HUGE thank you too all the wonderful kids that helped out. Their magic paint touch made this plain white fence beautiful! Painting by Slidely Slideshow |
