On Friday, we did a little predicting and balancing activity, the students were asked to find two objects in the room that were relatively similar in size and predict which one would weigh more. We then used a home-made balance to find out the results of our predictions. _As teachers, we always adapt to the situations that may arise and as I am not an expert balance maker ;) the balance was not as 'well made' (or well thought out!) as I would have liked! I showed the students how I made it, (my intention was to have them make one as a group afterwards) but as it had some flaws, we looked at how we could make it better instead. The students came up with solutions on how we could fix it and how we could make it better next time... so this ended up being a lesson (for me and the students ;) ) on taking every opportunity to make things a learning experience :) That being said, it still functioned as a semi-accurate scale and the activity turned into a problem solving activity as well ;)
_Our trip to the ski hill this week was tons of fun! It was a beautiful winter day! These little skiers are becoming experts, some of them graduated to the bigger hill! It is an amazing opportunity our kinder kids have to take part in this sport at such a young age. They are developing many skills by taking part in skiing!
Another way to understand the important role certain methods of transportation play in our community is to make a community ourselves! After our city planners meeting, buildings and roads were assigned to specific team members. They became responsible for one aspect of the city. Then, the busy workers got to work! Once all the 'construction' was done, the addition of toy people and vehicles will take place. Here is where we get to the central idea of transportation and its direct link to the community. We will play using all the vehicles of the community and then have them taken away and continue to play and function as a community, demonstrating their value will be the aim. An emergency may happen and we will not have an ambulance! How will all the food get delivered to the grocery store! We will reflect on all these possibilities and scenarios and discuss how transportation is linked to our community.
Dans l'esprit de notre module, nous avons fait un jeu inspiré par le jeux classique, serpents et échelles. Nous avons appelé le jeu roues et rivière!_ _Check out the full album on Picassa...click on the link below :)

We were going to look for where they were made and mark it on our globe...using jelly beans! Each jelly bean represented one of the products the students chose...toys, stuffed animals, books. We took turns looking for the 'made in...' tags and when we found it, we marked the country on our globe. We had about 40 products and after we had marked all of them, we noticed that China was a manufacturer of many products! This activity provoked more discussion about the types of transportation used for us to have these products and without it, how we would solely rely on local products, reinforcing the idea that transportation is directly linked to our needs and wants. It also provoked conversation about how all this transportation affects our environment and buying locally or at least buying things that were made closer to home would lessen the pollution created by all this transportation. Many products traveled around the world creating great amounts of pollution.
We extended our activity by making a chart to demonstrate our findings. The globe with the jelly beans was our data and the chart, the graphic organizer. This enforced the information we discovered about China being a leader in manufacturing products. The following week, we will do the same activity using different foods. We will look at where our food comes from and how it gets to us, focusing on how transportation is directly linked to our needs and the needs of our community...as food is a major need ;) Toys are as well...sort of ;) |
