To help answer one of our unit questions (How has transportation changed over the years?) we started an ongoing time-line. We started off with a bunch of pictures I provided and as we continue through the unit, students will be able to add to it themselves. Through research, books and activities, they will see many images of different forms of transportation that, with their initiative, they will print and/or photocopy to add to the time-line. They may even draw pictures of their own to add to it! Another great benefit of doing a time-line is that it helps develop the concept of time. We had a good discussion about time and what those numbers on the time-line represented before we started the activity. It really helped that we just started a new year! Later on in the unit, we will do a fun activity where we will invent a mode of transportation we think we may see in the future. With our creative minds and taking a look at ultra-modern modes of transportation, I'm sure the students will come up with some pretty creative things! They will be added to the end of our time-line where you see the year 2020!

We are starting our new unit of inquiry, titled 'Getting Around'. The central idea for the unit is how transportation systems are directly related to the needs of the community. After introducing the unit, we came up with some questions we had about transportation. These questions will be used to drive the inquiry. So what were the students curious about? Here are some of the questions the students had along with some teacher questions to provoke curiosity.
Our unit will be based around finding answers to these questions we are just so curious about! Through books and activities, discussions, field trips and research. Our inquiry has begun!
